Beam-and-Block Floor — Cross-Polarisation on Inline and Cross-Line Channels

Beam-and-Block Floor — Cross-Polarisation on Inline and Cross-Line Channels

Description

Radargram recorded on a beam-and-block floor with a GSSI FLEX NX stepped-frequency antenna, dual channel: one antenna oriented inline, the other cross-line. The profile was run perpendicular to the beams. The structure was verified by visual inspection from the soffit.

A beam-and-block floor poses a specific difficulty: the beams are evenly spaced and their reinforcement runs in one direction only, while the infill blocks between them create voids and interfaces that clutter the section.

With the scan running perpendicular to the beams, the two channels do not see the same targets in the same way. One antenna is polarised parallel to the longitudinal steel, the other perpendicular to it, and the response of a bar depends strongly on that relative orientation. Comparing the two channels therefore reveals what neither shows alone: the beam pattern separates from the secondary reinforcement, and the boundary between beam and block becomes legible. The merge function in GPRviewer combines both channels and makes that contribution directly visible.

Raw unprocessed files. Visual verification from the soffit gives the true floor geometry, which makes this dataset an interpretation reference rather than an illustration.
