Industrial Slab GPR Survey: Heterogeneous Reinforcement and Subgrade, Inputs for Bearing Capacity Assessment
Description
Profile recorded on a factory floor with a GSSI UtilityScan DF dual-frequency 300/800 MHz antenna, ahead of new works. No records exist, no destructive testing is possible: yet one needs to know what will be built on.
GPR does not calculate bearing capacity, but it reveals what makes it vary. Here, two heterogeneities stand out.
The reinforcement is not uniform. At 800 MHz, the density and regularity of the bars change along the profile. A slab with varying reinforcement does not resist point loads — machinery, racking legs — uniformly, and such variations often betray successive repairs or extensions.
Nor is the subgrade. At 300 MHz, the response of the support changes from one zone to another, suggesting differences in compaction. A hypothesis to be confirmed: this is precisely what testing must check.
The slab-subgrade interface shows little contrast on this profile, and thickness is not easily readable. What matters here is not an absolute measurement but mapping the zones where a uniform design assumption would be wrong — so that plate load or penetrometer tests go there, rather than on an arbitrary grid.
No ground truth: this is the real condition of a preliminary survey. The exercise is to rank anomalies by confidence level and propose a targeted testing programme.
