GPR Survey of a Car Park Raft Slab Showing Multiple Defects and Forms of Distress
Description
Profile recorded on the raft slab of a car park showing multiple forms of distress, with a GSSI NX15 antenna at 1.5 GHz. One file.
Two phenomena dominate the radargram. Cover varies considerably along the profile: the bars do not follow a constant depth, which is itself diagnostic information — insufficient cover exposes the steel to corrosion, and this variability guides the rest of the investigation. The signal attenuates rapidly with depth, water saturation in the concrete dissipating the energy before it reaches the soffit.
The direct consequence: the raft thickness cannot be confirmed from this measurement. No usable back-wall reflection appears. That is a result, not a failure: an operator must recognise when a measurement does not answer the question asked, and say so rather than force an interpretation. Another non-destructive method — impact echo, ultrasonics, or a targeted core — would be appropriate here to obtain the thickness.
The signal-to-noise ratio nevertheless remains high in the upper part. The two closely spaced reinforcement layers are clearly distinguishable: the dataset suits practice in picking closely spaced layers, and shows what the resolution of the NX15 can separate.
