Formwork block Wall: 3D Grid Over a Void, 24 Crossing Profiles
Description
3D grid recorded on a concrete formwork block wall with a GSSI FLEX NX dual-antenna system. Twenty-four profiles: nine horizontal lines spaced 20 cm apart, run from bottom to top, and fifteen vertical lines spaced 25 cm apart, run from left to right. The wall thickness was verified on site at 20 cm.
A hollow-block wall is void by design: its cells receive the infill concrete, and a poorly filled cell leaves a void inside the structure. This is a common workmanship defect, invisible at the surface, and it compromises the load-bearing capacity of the element.
The void is clearly visible here, and its signature reads on both scan directions — which is precisely what separates it from an artefact: a real anomaly persists when the orientation changes, an artefact does not.
For C-scan reconstruction, the crossing grid, regular and documented, allows plan views to be rebuilt at different depths. The known thickness calibrates the scale, and the void can be followed from one slice to the next.
For automated processing. Twenty-four profiles of a single structure, in two directions, form a coherent set for testing automatic picking of reinforcement or cavities across a whole element rather than on an isolated line.
